Federal government supports companies with funding for fast-charging infrastructure

The Federal Ministry of Transport has announced an initiative to promote fast-charging infrastructure for commercial companies and fleet users. A total of 400 million euros will be made available for this funding program, which for the first time also includes the expansion of charging stations for trucks.

Specifically, the program provides financial support for commercially used fast charging points with a minimum output of 50 kW. This also includes funding for charging stations for trucks.

The federal government's financial support covers various areas, including "capital expenditure on fast-charging infrastructure," "costs for grid connection and installation of electrical lines and connections, including civil engineering work," and the promotion of technical equipment such as electricity storage.

There are some important requirements to be observed. Each company can only submit one funding application. Smaller companies can receive a funding rate of up to 40 percent, while larger companies can apply for up to 20 percent. Regardless of the planned number of fast-charging stations, the maximum funding per application is 5 million euros in any case.

Certain amounts apply to the eligible expenditure per charging station. For charging capacities of 50 to 149 kW, the maximum funding per charging point is 14,000 euros for small and medium-sized companies and 7,000 euros for large companies. For charging points with a maximum charging capacity of more than 150 kW, small and medium-sized companies receive a maximum of 30,000 euros and large companies 15,000 euros.

It is important to note that each company can only submit one application, unless they are subsidiaries with separate legal personality, which must submit their own application, in which case the maximum funding for all applications from "affiliated companies" combined is 30 million euros.

Further conditions for the funding are that the charging stations must be built in Germany and must belong to the applying company for at least two years after commissioning. In addition, green electricity must be used to charge at the charging stations.

Johannes Pallasch, spokesman for the management team of the National Charging Infrastructure Control Center, emphasized the importance of electrifying commercial fleets and described the funding program as a crucial instrument for the future of electromobility. He emphasized that this program will make simple and fast charging at the depot or at the company fleet parking lot a reality.

Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport, Volker Wissing, underlined the need for high investments by companies in the course of the transition to electric vehicles. The federal government's funding is intended to support companies in this important step towards climate-friendly and future-oriented mobility.

The funding program is aimed primarily at craft and commercial enterprises and fleet users such as car sharing and taxi companies, but also companies in the logistics sector. It is a groundbreaking initiative that promotes the expansion of commercial fast-charging infrastructure regardless of vehicle procurement.

Applications for this funding program can now be submitted via the Jülich project management agency. In addition, another funding program for the self-generation and use of solar power for electric cars in residential buildings will start in Germany on September 26, 2023, with a budget of up to 500 million euros available.
