Mandatory charging stations at gas stations

From 2028, major petrol station operators in Germany with at least 200 locations must offer rapid charging stations for electric cars. The German government is sticking to this requirement, despite demands from the industry to postpone the deadline to 2030 or 2032. An extension would slow down the market development of e-mobility, the government argues according to a report. Every affected petrol station must offer at least one charging station with 150 kW power. Exceptions are possible if no space is available.
The expansion of this charging infrastructure is part of the strategy to promote electromobility, in addition to the establishment of the Deutschlandnetz. The goal remains to have around 15 million electric cars on the road by 2030, even if this number increasingly seems unrealistic.
Industry representatives criticize the obligation, as expansion is not technically or economically sensible at all locations. Approval processes and grid connections are often problematic. There is a risk of misinvestment if charging points are forced at unsuitable locations.
There is also criticism from within the electromobility sector: petrol stations are outdated, as electric cars could be charged more practically at places people visit in their daily lives anyway, such as supermarkets or gyms.
